Machaquito. The Bullfighter

Rafael González Madrid “Machaquito” was a bullfighter born on 2 of January of 1880 in Cordoba, in the bullfighter’s neighbourhood of Campo de la Merced. Since he was a young boy, he worked in the nearby slaughterhouse, school of many festival figures; he became fond of the bullfighting art. He killed his first young bull when he was 16 years old in an amateur bullfight with Rafael Molina Martinez, known as “Lagartijo Chico”, the small lizard. With him, he would form a pair in the Cuadrilla of Cordobean boys, organized by Rafael Sánchez “Bebe”.

He presented in Madrid on 8th of September of 1898 and became a fully-fledged bullfighter in the same place on 16th of September of 1900.

In 1902, he was awarded with the Beneficence Cross with Excellent Mention because he saved many people, on 29th of August 1902 afternoon, when part of the section fall down and the public fall into the bullring just when the first bull left the bullpen. Machaquito took his red cape and sword, and by giving a magnificent thrust, he killed the bull before he could reach the public.

On 16th of October 1913, Juan Belmonte became a fully-fledged bullfighter from Macahquito’s hands in Madrid.

On 21 of October 1913, Machaquito retired from bullfighting in presence of his family.

On 21 of October 1913, Machaquito retired from bullfighting in presence of his family. By this simple and traditional act, he would close a chapter in bullfighting story.

To the actual owner, Manuel Reyes Roldán, he said that, the Anisette made him more famous than bullfighting. He said “People know me in Cordoba and few other places, but, the liquor with my name is known in the business worldwide”.
